For decades, the historic 1881 Thomaston Railroad Station lay silent in the shadows of neglect and disrepair until the late 1990s. After years of gradual small repairs from volunteers, Kronenberger and Sons was awarded the contract for full exterior wood restoration in 2014. With an allotted time of 90 days, Kronenberger and sons was tasked with a unique project that presented its own difficulties. The project involved a bit of detective work that required an exact historic documentation and subsequent replication of the original African Mahogany wood brackets and frames. We also restored a set of original wooden brackets recovered from storage in the building’s attic. The West Main Entrance Canopy had suffered many years of exposed water damage resulting in the need of epoxy resin and Dutchmen repairs to restore the existing wood in place. All exterior woodwork was then primed and painted. In addition to the extensive woodwork, a sizable portion of the exterior brick facade required selective cutting, replacing, and repointing.
