“The Mount” is a country house in Lenox, Massachusetts. It was the home of the famed author Edith Wharton, who designed the estate and gardens herself. Wharton envisioned her estate to have elegant gardens to surround the house with a sculpted natural landscape. Included is a sunken Italian garden with porticos and alcoves in its stone walls.
In 1921, Edith was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for literature. Her novels and short stories were known for portraying the lives and morals of those living in late 19th century.
Kronenberger & Sons restored the greenhouse at the Edith Wharton estate. This was a ground-up restoration that involved completely rebuilding the brick foundation and the attached wooden storage shed. It also included dismantling and cleaning or replacing of the old metal shelving, staging, eaves, gutters, and glazing. The empty frame received new glass all around, once again operable as it was in Wharton’s time.
The Greenhouse at Edith Wharton’s Home is #71000900 on the National Register of Historic Places.
